What you need for this recipe
Ingredients and Substitutions:
- Avocado - Fresh, ripe hass avocado with pit and skin removed.
- Vegan Mayonnaise - You could also use sour cream or regular mayonnaise.
- Lime Juice - Fresh squeezed is always best, but use whatever kind you have!

How to make this recipe
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
Begin by cutting your avocado in half. Using the bottom edge of a sharp knife, hit the pit of the avocado, then twist and remove it. Discard the pit.
Remove the avocado peel.
If using fresh lime juice, squeeze 1 ½ - 2 limes until you have ¼ cup of juice.
There is no need to chop the cilantro as the food processor will do it for you. However, you may wish to remove some of the stems.
Step 2: Blend
Add the avocado, mayonnaise or sour cream, lime juice, cilantro, and salt to a food processor or blender.
Secure the lid and blend or pulse for about 30 seconds, or until well combined.
The sauce should be rather thick. If you would like it thinner, blend in water 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
Step 3: Finishing Touches
Taste and adjust the level of seasoning if necessary.
Use a rubber spatula to remove all of the sauce and place avocado cream sauce into a bowl or an airtight container. Use immediately or store in the fridge!
Expert Tips & Tricks
- Add a piece of fresh jalapeño to add a spicy kick to this sauce!

- If you don't enjoy cilantro, it is completely fine to leave it out entirely. You can also experiment with some basil, extra lime juice or zest, and parsley to imitate the cilantro flavor.
Recipe FAQs
If you keep this avocado cream sauce in the fridge in an airtight container, it should last up to 5 days. It is possible that there may be a small amount of browning due to the avocado, but the taste should still be fine.
Creamy avocado sauce tastes very similar to guacamole, but it is zestier and smoother due to the lime juice! It is also much creamier thanks to the mayo or sour cream.
I think avocado goes well with anything, but especially more Mexican and Asian-influenced recipes. Try mixing this avocado cream sauce into Cilantro Rice, topping Tortilla Soup with it, or just eating it with chips!
