This vegan apple crisp recipe is the perfect fall dessert! Make them in individual servings for a group, or bake it all in one batch! This vegan and gluten-free treat is sure to impress!

three apple pies in mini pots with garnishes around.

It's officially fall and that means all things pumpkin and apple spice! This vegan apple crisp is so delicious, with a tangy sweetness. Not to mention, its also vegan, naturally gluten-free, and relatively healthy!

Make this recipe in individual ramekins so that each person has their own serving, or put it all into one baking dish and bake a large portion! Serve this as a dessert after enjoying some Pumpkin Mac and Cheese or Apple Butternut Squash Soup for the perfect fall feast!

    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Perfectly Sweet - This dish will satisfy your sweet tooth, but the bright apples will keep it tart enough to not be overly sweet!
    • Super Easy - Make this recipe so quickly, get all of the satisfaction of an apple pie, without all of the hassle! Just mix the apple mixture, make the crumble, layer, and bake!
    • Naturally Gluten-Free - Since my recipe calls for almond flour instead of all-purpose, this recipe is completely gluten-free without any substitutions!

What you need for this recipe

    Ingredients and Substitutions:

    ingredients with labels.
    • Apples - I recommend using 4-5 mostly green apples, with a few red. For this recipe, I used 3 ½ green apples and 1 whole red apple. But you can mix it up as you please!
    • Brown Sugar - Light brown sugar adds the perfect sweetness!
    • Almond Flour - Regular, superfine almond flour adds the perfect nuttiness.
    • Lemon Juice - This is used in the apple mixture to add a bit of tartness.
    • Oats - Use rolled oats, not quick oats!
    • Vanilla - I love using vanilla bean paste, but extract works too.

    How to make this recipe

    Step 1: Prepare Ingredients

Begin by coring and chopping your apples. I chose to leave the skin on, but you can remove it if you like.

First, cut the apple in the half from the stem to the bottom. Use a paring knife and a spoon to remove the core of stem and seeds.

Next, either dice the apple or thinly slice longways, then cut in half.

    Step 2: Make Apple Mixture

Add all of the sliced or chopped apples to a large mixing bowl.

Add ½ cup of brown sugar, all of the lemon juice, all of the vanilla paste, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Use a spatula or your hands to mix thoroughly.

    • sliced apples with all mixture ingredients before mixing.
    • apples with other ingredients mixed in.

    Step 3: Make the Crumble

In a separate mixing bowl, add 1 cup of brown sugar, ½ cup almond flour, 1 cup of oats, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of nutmeg.

    Mix these until fully combined.

Next, add 6 tablespoons of vegan butter. Use a fork to mix this butter in with the rest of the crumble mixture. Try to avoid large clumps if possible.

    Step 4: Assemble & Bake

Pre-heat the oven to 350º Fahrenheit.

Line individual ramekins or a baking dish with oil, butter, or baking spray.

three ramekins with oil in the bottom.

Scoop about ½ cup of apple filling into the ramekins. Then, scoop roughly ¼ cup of the crisp topping on top of this.

Tip: The apples will shrink a bit while baking, so if you want it to be a full ramekin, slightly overfill them as much as possible!

    • apples in ramekins before baking.
    • apples with crisp on top in ramekins before baking.

If using one large dish instead of individual ramekins, just fill the apples almost to the top of the dish, then cover in crumble.

Place the apple crisps in the oven and bake for 35 minutes for individual ramekins, or 40 minutes for a large dish.

Remove when apples are bubbling and the crisp is golden brown. Allow to cool and serve with vegan ice cream or whipped cream!

    Expert Tips and Tricks

    • Use any sort of apple that you like the best in this recipe. I recommend using a more tart apple such as Granny Smith, but any kind will work!
    • If you like a crunchier crisp topping, try adding some roughly chopped almonds or walnuts. Mix those into the crisp mixture as normal.
    • Serve this warm with a big scoop of Vegan Mint Julep Ice Cream or a scoop of vegan whipped cream!

    Recipe FAQs

Is apple crisp the same as apple crumble?

The two dishes are nearly the exact same. However, apple crumble typically does not contain oats or nuts

What is the best apple for a crisp?

I highly recommend using a mixture of apples for this apple crisp. I predominantly use Granny Smith Apples, with one Pink Lady Apple to balance the tartness.

What can I use instead of vegan butter?

In place of the vegan butter, you can use softened coconut oil. Or, if this dish doesn't need to be vegan for you, you can use regular butter!
