🌶 What is Hot Honey?
Hot Honey is sort of the "it" girl of condiments – she is the moment. It is a sweet and spicy condiment made by infusing honey with spicy peppers, usually red pepper flakes. It has become popular in bottle form that you can buy at a store, but it is SO much cheaper and easier to make it yourself! Hot honey is often seen drizzled on pizza, marinated on chicken, used as a dipping sauce, and smeared onto roasted vegetables.
🍯 Why you'll love this Hot Honey Recipe
- Extremely Affordable. If you've ever tried to buy a bottle of hot honey, you may have noticed it is quite expensive! Making it yourself is too easy and simple to buy the bottle!
- Ridiculously Easy to Make! Seriously, it's like two steps.
- Perfect on Everything. Chicken fingers, crispy tofu, broccoli, veggies, everything!
🥘 What you need for this recipe
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Honey - Whatever kind of honey you like the most is best!
- Red Pepper Flakes - You know, the stuff they serve at pizza restaurants. I don't recommend substituting this, because I think red pepper flakes are so simple. However, if you want to get fancy, you could try using jalapeño peppers, serrano peppers, or even habanero .
Tools and Equipment
- Pan
- Rubber Spatula
- Mesh Strainer (optional)
📋 How to make Hot Honey
Step 1: Make the Hot Honey
Add the honey to a pan over low to medium heat.
Allow it to come to a gentle simmer, then add the red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
Simmer on low for at least 1 minute, then remove from heat.
Step 2: Finishing Touches
OPTIONAL: While still hot, pour the honey into a mesh strainer sitting over a heat-safe bowl. Discard red pepper flakes. If you choose to strain the honey, I recommend simmering for longer.
Store in a container and let cool to room temperature.
💭 Expert Tips & Tricks
- To avoid excess stickiness, lightly spray the measuring tools used for the honey before adding it in, so it slides out more easily!
- The longer you simmer, the spicier the honey will become, especially if you are going to strain it afterwards.
- If you want a bit more flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar into the honey before taking it off the heat. Just about a teaspoon or so.
Recipe FAQs
Hot honey can be used in so many ways including drizzled on pizza, roasted vegetables, fried foods like chicken or tofu, or anywhere you want a bit of a sweet heat kick!
This has a nice subtle kick of spice without being overwhelmingly hot. You can decrease the spice by using fewer red pepper flakes, but it isn't very spicy to begin with.
It doesn't have to be refrigerated, though it won't hurt it to refrigerate if you prefer.
